Where can I find information on writing HTML?

Some sites which I have found useful are:

There are also a number of graphical HTML editing tools available which allow you to create web pages in a "word processing" style.

  • Adobe GoLive Probably the best HTML editor that there is, but it comes at a price!
  • Netscape Composer A powerful tool which comes free with the standard Netscape browser

Why can't I get to the online control panel?

The online control panel uses port 2082. This is not the standard port for HTTP (web) traffic, so it is often blocked by corporate firewalls. If you are trying to access your online control panel from inside a controlled network, for example a school, office or internet cafe, then you may find that it does not work.

If you find that you can not get to your online control panel from home you need to check your firewall software to ensure that port 2082 is opened.

Sadly there is nothing we can do to change the port which the control panel uses, so fixing this problem will generally be a matter of negotiating with your system administrator.

How do I send and receive emails from my email server?

In order to receive emails you will need an email client. One of the most readily available email clients is Microsoft's Outlook Express, which is installed by default with most versions of Windows. Follow these simple steps to set up Microsoft Outlook Express to receive emails from your hosting account.

1. Start Outlook Express, which can be found in the start menu under Start -> Programs.

2. Go to Tools -> Accounts...

3. Select the Mail tab. Note that it may not look exactly like the screen shot below, as you may be using a different version. The same buttons and list view should be visible however.

Outlook Express Setup

Note, also, that you may have some entries in the Accounts list. For the purposes of this FAQ you can ignore these.

4. Click Add -> Mail. A wizard will appear. The first page of the wizard prompts you for your display name. This is the name which will be used when you compose emails. Click Next when you are done.

Outlook Express Setup

5. The next page prompts you for your email address. Yet Another Hoster allows you to have multiple email addresses and mailboxes. You should enter the primary email address for the mail box you are setting up. For example, for your personal mail box you might use "your.name@yourdomain.com". Click Next when you are done.

Outlook Express Setup

6. The next page will ask you to enter the names of the incoming and outgoing mail servers and the type of your incoming mail server. Select "POP3" from the incoming server type box. Enter mail.yourdomain.com as the name for both incoming and outgoing servers and click Next when you are done.

Outlook Express Setup

7. The next page will prompt you to input your account name and password. The account name is the name of the mail box you wish to fetch mail from. The account name must be suffixed with "@yourdomain.com".

Account name: mailboxname@yourdomain.com
Password: whatever your password is

Leave the "Log on using secure password authentication" box unchecked and click Next when you are done.

Outlook Express Setup

8. The wizard is now complete. Click Finish. If you find the wizard in your version of Outlook Express to be different then don't panic! Simply ensure that you have entered the correct information into the correct boxes and complete the wizard as normal.

Outlook Express Setup

9. You will now see your account in the list. There are a couple more alterations which should be made to the account settings before it will work correctly. Select the account from the list by clicking it and press the Properties button.

Outlook Express Setup

10. Select the General tab and enter a more descriptive name into the account name box at the top of the page.

Outlook Express Setup

11. Select the Advanced tab. At the bottom of the page you will find a section called Delivery. It is more secure to have the mail client leave messages on the server for a few days. This will allow you to fetch messages back from the server in the event that you have a problem with your computer and will also allow you to use the internet mail feature of your hosting account. Select Leave a copy of messages on the server and remove from server after... and enter a number of days in the edit box. I suggest around 5 to 10.

Outlook Express Setup

12. Click OK to close the properties box.

13. Click Close to close the Internet Accounts dialog.

14. Press the Send Recv. button on the Outlook Express toolbar and your mails should be collected from the server correctly.

If you wish to add other mail boxes then you can do so by repeating the steps above.
